Home is more than shelter; it is sanctuary. It is a place of belonging, consistently promising rest, safety, and community. It is the solid ground upon which a fulfilling life is built that caters to our needs holistically.
Yet, for many, this fundamental sanctuary is systematically dismantled. Through state-sanctioned violence—both legislative and direct—and the city of Austin’s facilitation of relentless gentrification, a cycle of displacement is enforced. This forced migration has its legacy in colonialism, continually pushing marginalized communities, lower class Black and Brown people to the precipice of erasure and silencing. This reality renders the city inhospitable for those who do not live with excess.
Fortunately, the practice of mutual aid offers a means of communal survival. It is the active process of making home wherever we are, built on solidarity and an investment in the liberation of others just as much as ourselves. From each according to their ability, to each according to their need, it stitches the true meaning of community into being, one of resilience and reciprocity.
In this spirit of collective care, we have pooled together some resources focused on housing justice, dedicated to supporting the most disenfranchised among us within this city. These are tools for survival, for resistance, and for the slow, steadfast work of building home.
